Each apartment is outfitted with one ethernet drop to connect to the MIT Residential Network. Cables are provided free of charge by IS&T. Note that It is against MITNet Rules of Use to use routers, hubs, switches or repeaters since they interfere with the ability of other residents to access the network. See the MIT Residential Networking site for more information. Eastgate also has wireless internet service (802.11b/g) throughout the building. In order to ensure that all students have access to the wireless network provided by MIT, all access points have been individually configured to maximize coverage and keep interference at a minimum. To keep the interference level low, students are urged not to connect and turn on devices that operate in the 2.4GHz range. This includes private 802.11b/g access points and some cordless phones. IS&T policy prohibits the use of personal access points since they are likely to interfere with the currently deployed wireless network. If you are experiencing any problems with your wireless connection, please submit a description of the problem to http://rcc.mit.edu. Every Eastgate apartment is outfitted with a cable television hook-up. For more information about hooking it up and channel listings, please visit the MIT Cable website. MIT Cable does not currently carry ESPN or New England Sports Network. The Eastgate Lounge television has Dish Network, which includes both of these channels as well as many others. For a complete listing of the Dish Network channels accessible in the lounge, click here. MIT Cable only offers one service package, which is made available to all students living on campus. In the past, they had offered a premium service package, but the subscription rates were so low (fewer than 40 on the entire campus at the end of 2006) that they could not make a business case for continuing, and the bandwidth used for the subscription channels was better used to serve the majority of campus residents by adding more channels. Comcast does not provide service to the MIT campus either, and have not been interested for the same reason as above. MIT does not permit individual Eastgate residents to have satellite TV installed to their apartments since the building construction does not support it. Every Eastgate apartment is outfitted with a standard phone jack. Included in your rent is (incoming and outgoing) campus phone service and incoming only external phone calls. If you would like to make external calls (anything outside of campus), you must sign up for basic phone service, which is currently $17/month (plus a $25 activation fee during certain times of year). This price covers the cost of unlimited local calls. Long-distance calls and international calls cost extra. Information on phone service, including all of the rules, fees, and rates can be viewed here. Please contact our house manager, Carla Bengtson (carlab [at] mit (dot) edu), to request activation/deactivation of basic phone service and/or for telephone repair requests.
