Questions can be directed to jrmac@mit.edu.

Update September 4, 2009

September 4th, 2009

Dewey Library Project

Crews will be refinishing the exterior of the entrance to the Dewey Library (E53) beginning on Friday, September 4 at 6:00pm with an anticipated end time on Saturday, September 5 at 8:00pm.  There will be a scheduled break in work from 4:00am-6:00am on Saturday, September 5.  A request has been made to the contractor to remind crews not to shout when communicating.  More information is expected regarding the types of tools that will be used for the work and the anticipated noise levels.  Once that information has been obtained, it will be posted here.

Permits have been obtained by project managers to allow for the work to be done outside established construction hours in the City of Cambridge.   Access to the building through the main doors will be maintained.

Parking

All parking permits have been distributed in the mailboxes.  If you did not receive a permit but have been approved for a permit, you will be contacted directly by the Graduate Housing Office next week when your permit is ready for pick-up.

If you have any questions regarding the above information, please contact Jason McKnight at jrmac@mit.edu.

Parking Update September 1, 2009

September 1st, 2009

The Eastgate Family Parking Lot located next to the building is now open!  This parking lot is only available to those with a Family Permit.  The Family Permit is an Eastgate Permit with the letter “F” on it.  Signage will be in place by the end of the week regarding handicap spaces, loading spaces, and others.  Family permits also allow for the resident to park in the Hayward St. Lot and Hayward St. Annex Lot should there be no spaces available in the Family Lot.

Overall Parking Lot Information

The parking lot is temporary until final paving next year.  The layer of asphalt is currently in place in order to allow for parking.  The final coat will be done next year.  The final coat is scheduled for a later date due to a number of reasons.  One is that the parking lot will extend toward the new building once constructed, increasing the spaces available to Eastgate and maintaining a traffic flow to the new parking garage under the new Sloan Building.  In order to improve the quality of the lot, the final coat will be done at a time when both sections are available.

Another reason for the delay is due to traffic by a number of constituents over the next year that will result in wear and tear to the lot.  Any damage will be repaired before the final coat, allowing for a delay in needed work to the lot down the line.

Questions regarding this decision can be directed to Jason McKnight at jrmac@mit.edu.

2009-2010 Parking Permits

Carla will have the 2009-2010 parking permits for those that applied by August 21, 2009 available for pick up on Friday, September 4, 2009.  Those that applied after August 21, 2009 will be able to pick up their permit at the Housing Office next week.  The Housing Office will contact you directly when it is available for pick up.

Current Permit Holders

Family permits distributed last year are still active until September 15.  You are permitted to park in the Eastgate Family Parking Lot.  If you have an Eastgate Resident Permit, you are permitted to park in the Hayward St. Lot and the Hayward St. Annex Lot.

Future Permit Holders

Once you obtain your 2009-2010 parking permit, you will be able to park in the Family Lot should you have an “F” on your permit.

Any questions or concerns can be directed to Jason McKnight at jrmac@mit.edu

Update on August 24, 2009

August 24th, 2009

Parking

All parking permit applications submitted by Friday, August 21, 2009 for Eastgate have been approved.  Some parking permits are still available and applications will be approved on a first-come-first-serve basis until the permits are exhausted.

A notice will be sent to the community when the permits are available for pick up.  In the meantime, temporary access cards and parking placards are available from Carla and her staff, located in the lobby.

Main St./Broadway Interchange

Work has begun on the Main St./Broadway Interchange.  The project completion date is currently set for November.  It has been stated that most loud noise exceeding that of normal construction should occur in the earlier weeks.

Wadsworth St. (Shuttle Stop Change)

Wadsworth St. will be one-way while reconstruction of the street is conducted.  In the meantime, the Northwest Shuttle stop originally placed at the corner of Amherst St. and Wadsworth St. has been moved.  The new, temporary stop is located at the corner of Amherst St. and Hayward St.

Please contact Jason McKnight with any questions at jrmac@mit.edu.

Construction Update August 11, 2009

August 11th, 2009

Parking

The previous post was incorrect in the return date of the Family Parking Lot.  The Family Parking Lot is scheduled to be returned to the Eastgate community on September 1, 2009.  Installation of curbs should be complete this week.

Sloan

Work continues on the Sloan Building.  Repairs to the area affected by the fire as well as work on the exterior continues.  Saturday work has not been required as of late.  More information to follow later next week.

Wadsworth St.

On August 17, 2009, Wadsworth St. will become one way and the entrance to the parking lot near Eastgate will be closed.  The area will still be accessible via the Main St./Broadway St. entrance.  Reconstruction of the roadway in Wadsworth St. is the reason for the change in traffic pattern.  The entire project is scheduled to only take two weeks, weather permitting.

Broadway/Main St. Interchange

Work is scheduled to begin on August 11, 2009 along the Main St./Broadway St. interchange.  The project will create a larger green space near Eastgate and redirect the traffic entering Broadway from Main St., as well as traffic exiting from the Eastgate parking lot onto Main St.  This project is scheduled to continue until November.  For more information regarding this project go to http://web.mit.edu/facilities/construction/Broadway-Main_realignment_aug-nov09.pdf

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding any of the projects, please contact Jason McKnight at jrmac@mit.edu.

Construction Update July 30, 2009

July 30th, 2009

Sloan Project

At this point in time, the on-site fire will have a no negative impact on the Eastgate community.  The Family Parking Lot is still scheduled to be returned on September 15, 2009, and other work continues on the new Sloan Building and neighboring area.

Dewey Library

Work on the library continues internally with removal of debris and other traffic being contained to the 7am-9am hours.

Parking

The Family Parking Lot is still currently on schedule to be returned to Eastgate by September 15, 2009.  The application for 2009-2010 parking permits will be live on August 1, 2009.  You can begin applying for Eastgate permits at that time.  All residents must apply by August 21, 2009 in order to be guaranteed a sticker by September 15, 2009.  Not every application is guaranteed a permit.

Since the Family Parking Lot is on schedule to return to Eastgate by the activation date of the new permits, the permits will be approved based on the procedures established before the 2008-2009 academic year.  Applications will be approved on a first-come-fist-serve basis unless requests should exceed the allotted number.  All Family Parking Permit Applications will be placed in accordance with date and time of application into the general pool of applications once the Family Permits have been exhausted.  If application numbers exceed allotted permits, a lottery will be conducted.  In years past, we have not exceeded our allocation.  In the event of a lottery, more information will follow.  The need for a lottery will be determined on August 20, 2009.

New residents will be arriving as well as continuing students remaining from August 21-September 15, before permits are issued.  During this transition period, it is possible that the number of vehicles present will exceed the number of Eastgate spaces because the Family Parking Lot will not yet be open.  Temporary access cards to the Westgate Lot will be available from Carla during this time.  In the event that you arrive back to Eastgate and are unable to find a parking space, you will have the option of parking in the Westgate Lot.

Please feel free to contact Jason McKnight at jrmac@mit.edu with questions.

Construction Update July 17, 2009

July 17th, 2009

Sloan Project

A fire has occurred on site resulting in emergency response vehicles during the early morning hours.  An investigation is currently underway regarding the cause of the fire.  A damage assessment is also being conducted.  Any potential impact to the Eastgate community will be communicated.  There is no additional information at this time.

Dewey Library

A dumpster delivery is scheduled for 7:00am on July 18, 2009.  The delivery falls within the guidelines of the permits obtained by the project.  The contractors did work to have the delivery arrive at the latest possible time in light of their project limitations.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please contact Jason McKnight at jrmac@mit.edu

Construction Update July 16, 2009

July 16th, 2009

Family Parking Lot

The new target date to return the Eastgate Family Parking Lot to Eastgate is September 1, 2009.  The curbing, which delayed the project, should be delivered on July 15, 2009.  Installation of the curbing will begin as soon as possible.  It is anticipated that the curbing work should be completed by August 14, 2009.  The parking lot will then remain closed until September 1, 2009 due to impending construction on Wadsworth St.  The construction planned for Wadsworth St. will require the closing of the Wadsworth St. entrance to the parking lot.  The lot will remain closed in order to better facilitate the moving of residents, construction traffic, and daily business of the Faculty Club and Library during the closure of the entrance.  During these two weeks, the lot will also be painted for parking and necessary signage will be installed.  The timeline is tentative and subject to change in both a positive or negative direction depending on weather, project approval, and other circumstances.

As of July 16, 2009, the timeline is still in place and current.  The curbing has been delivered and is currently being installed.

Dewey Library Project

The Dewey Library Project continues.  Most demolition and loud noise producing activities are complete and/or only occurring inside the building.  The entire project is on schedule to be completed by mid-August.  Contractors will be working to notify the community of any early deliveries that must occur in the early morning hours.  Contractors have been able, as of late, to have deliveries arrive between the 7:00am-8:00am hour.  The hour falls within local laws and ordinances for noise level.  It is also in an effort to minimize the negative impact on the Eastgate community.

Wadsworth St. Construction

There is currently a construction project regarding Wadsworth St. awaiting approval.  The project would involve the reconstruction of the roadway from roughly the entrance to Eastgate to the connection with Amherst St.  The project is scheduled to take only two weeks at the end of August.  The timing of this project is in coordination with other construction projects in the area and to once again minimize overall negative impact to the community.  More information regarding this project will be posted once it has been received.
