Maintenance

This page contains information about the following topics:

Repair Requests (Non-Emergency)

  • If something in your apartment needs repair or you suspect you might have a pest infestation, fill out a repair request form (MIT certificates required!). Housing will contact you via email so make sure you enter your email address correctly. Please fill out a separate request form for each individual problem if you have more than one.
  • Guest/entry system: If you have a problem using the new guest/entry system, do NOT open a repair request. Instead, send an email to telephone-help@mit.edu describing the problem.
  • Clogged sinks: If your sink is clogged, please do not use any Drano or acid-based drain openers. Repair requests are fulfilled within a few working days (depending on the urgency that you indicate on the form).
  • TV/Internet/Phone: Repairs for internet, cable television, and phone service should be handled through their individual departments.
  • After hours: If you need something repaired on an evening or weekend, please call 3-1500 from any campus phone or 617-253-1500 from any non-campus phone.
  • Laundry room: If you wish to report a problem with a washer or dryer in the Laundry Room, please do so on LaundryView.

Emergency Repairs

If you are experiencing an emergency maintenance issue (like a flooding), call 3-4948 (FIXIT) from any campus phone or 617-253-4948 from any non-campus phone to request assistance.

Buying/Installing an Air Conditioner

Every Eastgate apartment has an air conditioner bay. If you would like to purchase an air conditioner for you apartment, please keep in mind the following:

  • The A/C bay dimensions are 28.5 inches wide by 16.5 inches tall by 15 inches deep (click here to see a photo).
  • Here is a description of the AC units that fit in the apartments
  • There are both 110 Volt and 220 Volt outlets near the A/C bay, so you can purchase a unit with either type of plug.
  • Installation of the A/C unit is your responsibility and will not be done by the maintenance staff. If the cover is painted on, submit a repair request and the Maintenance Mechanic will remove the cover for you but the cover must stay in the apt. Please do not ask the maintenance staff to install or lift your A/C unit. The mechanic is not allowed {as per union rules} to lift resident's units to put them in place so please do not ask him.
  • If the drainage holes are clogged, be sure to have them drilled (submit a repair request) or unclog them before you install your A/C unit. A good test is to pour a little water at the back of the bay and make sure that it drains.
  • The only apartments that cannot accommodate an air conditioner are 2B, 2D, 2F & 2H because the structural cement in those four apartments cannot be altered.
